August 1907 What a Show. - The jewel of course the glorious ' 38 Mecedes Benz 540K Cabriolet B. - All numbers matching and authenticated by Daimler Benz. - 8 cylinder in line, supercharged 5401cc. Bodywork by Dailmler Benz's own works in Sindelfingen. All steel coach-built 2 door, 5 seater cabriolet, built in the golden era of the "coachbuilt automoblie" delivered to the German Consul in Johannesburg 1938 with only 3 further owners. The 500/540K series are amongst the most valuble automobiles in the world. Possiblly there are only a few convertibles still surviving today. This gem only fetched R7638.000.00 which I thought was low, but the good news was that it was purchased by a local gentleman and thus will remain in South Africa. We have 'lost' so many of our wonderfull legacy of motoring-giants from the past. ( See text and photos of the magnificent Mercedes Benz / Daimler Museum, Stuttgart elsewhere on this site. - See pics of a World Land Speed Record attempt car they built that ran an un-official 600klmph in 1939 when the World Land Speed record stood at something like 343klmph. - Unfortuntely the war stopped them making an official run ) THE SELLERS : 1962 Austin Healey Sprite fetched R45.000 ; !978 Laverda 3CL/1000 a low R9.120. ; 1961 Bentley S2 saloon R182,400.; 1964 Alfa GT Guilia Sprint R39,900.: 1974 Suzuki GT 750 went for R30,210. ; MG. JOHANNESBURG 12th. March ' 07. Following their very successfull Classic Car auction here in Johannesburg last year, Stephan Welz & Co. in association with Sotheby's held another one on the 12th. March and attracted a vast crowd of onlookers and an sizeable amount of bidders, as well as the usuall 'tyre-kickers'. There were bargains to be had and there were some very interesting offers up for grabs as well as to just see, - in the flesh as it were. ( I would like to kindly thank Jack Rosewitz and Alan Hogg for information provided and permission to post. Ed.) Examples that caught the eye were the fine concours Austin Healey MK1 BT7 ( left hand drive ) that went for R350.000 (+- $46.000 ). There were two more very nice Austin Healeys that I was surprised did not fall under the hammer considering the world market values feched by this marque these days. In particular the 3000 MK1 Race Car, beautifully prepared with 5-speed, BRG, upgraded disc brakes and caliphers. Registered and licensed, and created as a replica of the famous Austin Healey DD 300 raced at Le Mans in 1960, and still raced today by John Chatham. This car, in my opinion should have sold, and I was sure it would go at around + R300.000.- Did'nt.- What also did not sell was one of the most unusual and interesting cars for me; the 1935 Singer Le Mans. Awesome, with 2 litre, 6 cylinder, triple SU carbs, E.N.V.4-speed close ratio gearbox, aluminium 2-seater Le Mans style body with twin spare wheels and 15 gallon fuel tank. Recently repainted in the original ivory with red wheels with new tyres, 18 inch Rudge Whitworth wire wheels, full weather equipment, and in excellent condition. The only surviving team car of the 1935 season, prepared and raced by Fox & Nichol of Tolworth, United Kingdom. Large history and information file, and some spares with the car. - What was snapped up was the 1958 A.C. Bristol with 100 D2 engine, A.C. close-ratio box with Laycock de Normanville overdrive on all 4 gears. Superleggera all aluminium body, 72 spoke wide-rim wheels, original toolkit, Bristol engine workshop manual, optional front disc brakes with Alfin rear drums and in excellent full running order. The car is ex Eric Glasby of Bulawayo. Huge racing history. Multiple winner in sportscar championship racing in Rhodesia, South Africa and Mozambique in the late 50's and 60's . Class winner and third overall in South Afican 9-Hour Race. Includes complete spare Bristol 2000cc. motor with close ratio gearbox and overdrive. - Went for; R840.000 ( +- $112.000 ) ... A Yamaha TR2B race bike went for R55.000 (+- $7333 ) which I thought was low, considering its excellent restored condition and race history. - This pristine machine is from the era when Yamaha produced pure racing motor cycles available to the general public. In limited quantities. One could buy them 'off the shelf' so to speak and it was rumoured that, if an owner complained that his bike was down on power and not fast enough, the factory recommended "change the rider". - A truly extraordinary item was the 1912 Regal Precision 425 with wicker sidecar, which went for R80.000 ( +- $10.000 ) If you could have seen this very unusual machine, I think one would agree it went for a song.... What a glorious sight. ( Photos posted in PHOTO GALLERY section. Ed. ) - Staying with the two wheelers for a moment; the Norton Commando 750 Fastback 1969 in fine original condition only fetched R28.000 (+- $3733). This example of the 750 Fastback with its unique saddle tailpiece and stricking yellow paint was launched orginally in 1967 at the Earls Court Show and four times voted Machine of the Year, - The Commando was the best loved product of the final years of the British Motor Cycle industry. Engine vibrations were reduced by "Isolastic" engine mountings, 58 bhp gave 0-60mph in five seconds and 120 in top. - A 1953 Royal Enfield Meteor 700cc only managed R30.000 ( +-$4.000 ). - Royal Enfield started in 1897, building three-wheelers with De Dion engines. Their quality motor cycle production continued until 1971. The Meteor, with RE's big vertical twin, was amongst the most powerful engines built by the British. - Similarly the lovely 1948 AJS Model 18, 497cc, 23 bhp @ 5.400, 4-speed in excellent restored black & gold, registered and licensed went for R28.000 +- ( $3733 ). This early post-war model with heritage begining in the 1890's, is typical of the British large capacity singles of the time, this model introduced with the "teledraulic" front forks. - A 1951 Triumph Thunderbird, 500 vertical twin in good restored condition did'nt sell. Reserve at R30.000 +- ($ 4.000). Triumph, founded in 1897 by two Germans, their first vertical twin model, designed by Val Page, commenced production in 1933. This Thunderbird model, fitted with the Edward Turner designed vertical twin, is a fine example of the British industry of the era. Unique was the rear suspension contained in the center hub of the rear wheel. Most bikes of the time had no rear suspension. - A 1969 Triumph Bonneville went for R38.000 (+- $5000 ), silver & blue with black frame, the Bonneville is the iconic classic of the 50's and 60's British twins. With improved handling, twin leading shoe front brakes, Amal carbs, and nearly 50bhp, it was considered the ultimate of the era. Bonnevilles are investment rated at four to five star levels, worldwide. - On the later side and Japanese, the 1981 Kawasakki Z1300 with only 57.000klms., 6 cylinder, 120 bhp, 15bhp more than its rival Honda's CBX 1000 and more power than most cars. It represents the Japanese fixation with power outputs of the era. It became a cult machine and production continued until 1989.- This example went for a low R31.000 +-( $4133 ) - Staying with 'moderns', a very clean Ducati 900 SSD, custom blue frame and body paint with yellow flashes, gold Campagnolo wheels, 2x Dell Orto 40mm carbs and a Brian Wilson two into one stainless steel exhaust system, registered and licensed went for a paltry R32.000 +- ($ 4.266). - A 1935 Francis Barnett 250cc single with front girder forks and solid rear end in good restored condition, went for R28.000 +- ($3.740). - A totally awesome 1922 Matchless and Sidecar Model-H , V-twin JAP 1000cc motor. All bodywork in beige, with green flashes on tank, green upholstered sidecar seat, beige canvas soft top with what looked like the pre-runner to the front disc-brake. ( See photos.) Described as near concours. No sale at R125.000 +- ($16.600) Reserve. Joe Stevens built engines in 1897 and his sons built their first motor cycle in 1909. They manufactured a variety of machines with engines ranging from 298cc, 346cc and 498cc. This fine example is fitted with an engine from another famous British builder, JAP and is a large capacity V-Twin. - The last of the motor cycles was a pristine 1971 BSA Bushman, single two-stroke, of 173cc. - White, red and blue. - In the early 70's BSA produced 173cc Bantam two-strokes. This is the light, off-road version, aptly named the "BushMan". It is quite rare, as the British Motor Cycle was on it's knees by this time. It went for a low R 8.500 +- ($1.130 ). - Back to cars; a wire-wheeled Jaguar 3.8 MK 2 manual, leather interior, went for R119.000 +- ( $15.900 ). - With a very nice E-Type Series 1 in excellent condition fetching R260.000 +- ($34.700). - Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1961, Sir William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer's masterpiece, was rightfully a show stopper. The styling was stunning, and the performance from 265bhp, giving a top speed of around 150mph at a price of Sterling 2.098. About a third of the price of a Ferrari 250GT. It is today regarded as the benchmark classic. - The oft ignored 1967 Jaguar 420, with 39.000 miles in good restored condition did not sell at R65.000 reserve. Another Jaguar 420, 1969 with 111.000 genuine miles, orginal unrestored did'nt sell either at Reserve of ; R50.000 +- ($ 7.333 ) ( In my humble opinion, one of the nicest driving classic Jaguars.- Ed. ) A 1961 Jaguar 3.4 MK 2 fitted with 4.2 motor in excellent condition with wire-wheels did not sell at a reserve of R115.000. These Mk2's, introduced in 1959 were the final models in the range before the XJ6. The interior presentation is exquisite, with hand finished fillets of wood framing the windows and plush comfortable seating. Performance from the twin ohc engine is superb, with the exhaust note turning into an angry growl from 4.500rpm onwards. All told, a superb daily classic and investment opportunity. - And the one I should have bought :- a 1981 Maserati Quattroporte 111 V8 luxury sports sedan didnt sell at reserve; R60.000. - Can you believe that. - A 1959 Rover 100, third owner from new, registered and licensed, repainted with new leather upholstry to orignal spec. only fetched R26.000 +- ($3466). A 1969 Porsche 911E in good condition. This classic produced 165bhp @ 6200rpm. The car offers exceptional performance and economy with a fine sense of balance. The basic body style is still retained today and is still the favourite amongst purists. 1987 Porsche 944 S2 with 84.000 miles, A/C, sun-roof in average condition did not sell. Reserve of R57 500.+- ($7.600). - Of the newer cars, a 2000 Porsche GT3 with 52.000kms did not sell at a reserve of R660.000. - A 2001 Mecedes Benz CL 600 also did not sell at reserve; R455.000. Not a bad price considering this V12 power coupe is priced today at around R1million for an equivalent model. - a 1972 Porsche 911 RSR replica with 3600cc rebuilt racing motor in excellent condition with full roll cage, racing seats and belts, with a reserve price of R360.000 did not sell. - Another non-selling Porsche, a 1973 911T Rally Car, 2.8 litre, perfect example with extensive racing / rally history with reserve at R385.000. - A very pretty replica of a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder built in 1996 with 912 motor, five-speed gearbox and body in glass-fibre. The 550 was the first Porsche designed specifically for racing. In 1953, Glocker gave them their first win at Nurburgring. Two cars, fitted with 78bhp engines, finished first and second in their class at Le Mans. This is the car that built Porsches racing reputation. Genuine originals fetch in the millions. This replica built in the United States. Willwood 4-pot caliper disc-brakes fitted, at a reserve of R186.000. didnt sell. - A 1983 Rolls Silver Spirit, Introduced in 1981, was the fourth in the "standard steel" series. The body styling was updated, but the well proven mechanical components ( 6750cc V8 ) of the Silver Shadows were retained. Superb luxury, more than adequate performance was the satisfaction of these Rolls Royces. - No sale at R225.000 +- ($30.000) Reserve. - A 1980 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow 11 went for a low R149. 000 +- ($19.900) with the larger engine; V8 6750cc, slightly flared arches, dreadfull American compliant bumpers and American styled twin headlights, a front spoiler ( What, a spoiler on a Roller? What on earth !....Ed. ) - The star of the show ; a 1949 MG TC in excellent condition, in fact a Concours winner, went for R295.000. +- ($39.000). The TC was the first MG to be built after the marque founder, Cecil Kimber left the Nuffield organisation. All TC's that were exported, even to the United States were right-hand drive. In the first two years of production, most cars went to Australia and South Africa, ( which has one of the biggest MG Car clubs in the world, with most of th cars totally rust-free. Ed ) - A 1961 Bentley S2, V8 engine 6250cc, 4-speed auto in good condition, no sale at Reserve; R265.000 +- ($35.333 ). A 1965 Bentley S3 in excellent condition went for R230.000 +- ($30.600). This was the second in the series of "standard steel" production cars, the first being the Silver Dawn. Both rode on box section chassis and had adjustable rear suspension from inside the car, providing additional comfort and control. The S3 version is the last of the model series prior to the Silver Shadows, and was fitted with twin headlamps to comply with legislation in California (Shame.- Ed ). All S-type Bentleys had beautiful proportions, and were superbly built and well refined. - Another Bentley, a 1988 Turbo R with 101.000 miles in excellent condition indeed, did not sell at reserve R455.000. The 80's were a rich period in the super coupe sector. BMW's 635 CSi being a strong contender. Its elegant shape and easy driveability ensured its worldwide sales success. Somewhat lacking in investment growth in the past, recent sales activities show increases to support serious consideration for investors. - A 1982 Ferrari Mondial 8 3.0litre V8 with feul injection, 5-speed trans with recently rebuilt engine fitted with high compression pistons, giving + - 250bhp, new stainless steel sports exhaust, new clutch and brakes, plus A/ C re-gassed, 104.000kms, excellent condition did'nt go at R250.00 +- ($3.330 ) Reserve. - An interesting bike that also didn't go under the hammer was the pristine 1942 Harley Davidson WLA 'U' 10/12. I dont know. - An excellent restored example of the 'British' ( read proper leather seats and nice wood dash, unlike the French versions which were much plainer. -Ed.) Citroen Light 15 went for a mere R43.000 +- ($5700). Values of similar condition examples in the United Kingdom are in the region of Sterling 8.500 to S10.000 +- (R123.250 to R145.000).
